Agia Roumeli located at the exit of Samaria Gorge and is built on the ruins of ancient Tarra, who was famous for its oracle and was destroyed by an earthquake in AD 66.
The Tarra was small but independent city is broke and its own currency, which on one side depicting the head of an ibex and an arrow on the other hand, a bee. It was a great religious center with many Temples of Apollo and flourished in the Roman period.
In the village you will find many resort rooms and several restaurants. So anyone who wants can stay overnight after the descent of the Samaria Gorge or stay for a few days relaxing holiday.
Agia Roumeli, apart from Samaria Gorge is connected with the other part of
Crete by boats, east to
Loutro and
Hora Sfakion, and west to
Sougia and
Paleochora.
